What this tool measures

Hosting is the cheap part and it is not what a care plan is for. What you are actually buying is that somebody notices when something breaks, has a backup from before it broke, and is contractually obliged to respond within a stated time. Servers cost a few dollars a month; attention does not.

This prices the plan by the three things that genuinely change its cost: how much traffic the site carries, how often it is backed up, and how fast someone has to answer when it goes wrong. Everything else is an add-on you can take or leave.

How to use it

Set the traffic tier from analytics rather than from memory. Most sites are in the low tier and are quoted as though they were not.

Response time is the input worth thinking hardest about, because it is what you are really paying for. Next business day is fine for a brochure site. Four hours, any day, is a different commitment: it means somebody is on a rota, and it is priced like it.

Daily off-site backups are the one add-on worth having regardless of tier. The difference between a backup from an hour ago and one from last week is the difference between a ten minute rollback and a bad day.

How to read the result

The monthly figure covers hosting, the plan's stated checks, and support within the response time you chose. It does not cover new features, redesigns, or recovering from something you did to the site yourself, which is normal across the industry and worth having in writing.

Compare it against what an outage costs you rather than against the price of raw hosting. Those are the two numbers that make this decision, and only one of them appears on an invoice.

If a plan is cheaper than this and includes an urgent response time, read what the response time actually promises. Acknowledgement within four hours and resolution within four hours are very different products sold with similar wording.

What to do next

Ask any current provider when your last restore test was. Not backup, restore. An untested backup is a hope, and it takes twenty minutes a month to turn it into a fact.

Then check who holds the accounts. Hosting, domain and DNS should be in your name with the provider given access, not the other way round. That single arrangement is what makes changing supplier possible.

Questions people ask

Is managed hosting worth it over cheap shared hosting?

For a site that makes money, yes, and not because the servers are faster. It is because someone else is responsible for the update that breaks something, and on shared hosting that person is you.

How often should backups run?

Daily for most sites and more often for stores. Set it from how much work you are willing to lose rather than from the plugin's default.

What counts as support and what counts as a new request?

The workable line is that fixing what used to work is support and making something new is a request. Agree that line in writing at the start; almost every dispute in this category is about it.

Do I need uptime monitoring if the host has it?

Host monitoring tells you the server is up. It does not tell you your checkout is broken or your forms have stopped delivering. Those are the outages that cost money and the ones nobody notices for a day.
