An estimate works from typical scope. A quotation works from yours. Send this breakdown over and you get a fixed price back, from the person who would do the work, within one business day.

What this tool measures

SEO is sold as one thing and bought as two. A one-off technical fix is a defined piece of work with an end: crawlability, structure, speed, schema, the things that are either right or wrong. A retainer is standing capacity to keep publishing and keep earning links in a market where competitors are doing the same. They have different price shapes because they are different purchases, and quoting them as one number is how expectations get set wrong.

The two inputs that move this price most are site size and how contested the market is. Size is straightforward. Competitiveness is the one people misjudge about their own sector, which is why picking an industry sets a starting point you can then argue with.

How to use it

Choose the engagement type first. If your site has never had technical attention, the one-off fix is almost always the right first purchase, and it makes any later retainer cheaper because the retainer is no longer paying to work around problems.

Set site size by templates and by indexable URLs together. A store with four hundred products is a large site even if it has six templates, because four hundred pages can each be wrong in their own way.

Content and links are separate line items on purpose. They are the two costs that scale with ambition rather than with site size, and bundling them into a headline retainer is what makes SEO pricing opaque.

How to read the result

A retainer figure is capacity, not a promise. It buys a certain number of hours of attention each month, and what those hours can achieve depends entirely on the market you are in and the state you are starting from.

No legitimate provider guarantees a ranking, because none of them control the ranking. What can be committed to is the work: what gets audited, what gets fixed, what gets published, and what gets reported. Ask for a quote in those terms and it becomes comparable.

If the number looks high against your revenue, the honest conclusion is often that organic search is not the right channel for you yet. That is a legitimate answer and a cheaper one than a retainer nobody can justify at month six.

What to do next

Run the free audit checklist first. It costs nothing, it takes an afternoon, and it tells you whether you need the one-off fix, the retainer, or neither.

Then agree how success will be measured before work starts, and make sure it is something you can see: rankings for named terms, organic sessions to named pages, enquiries attributed to organic. Vague measures are how six months pass without a decision being possible.

Questions people ask

How long before SEO work shows results?

Indexation and technical fixes can show within days. Content and structure changes usually take weeks to be reflected and longer to compete. Links take longer than anyone selling them implies. Anyone naming a date for a competitive term is guessing.

Is link building worth paying for?

Real outreach that earns placements on sites people actually read is worth it and is expensive because it is labour. Bought links on networks are cheap because they are worthless at best and harmful at worst. The price difference between the two is the single most reliable signal of which you are being offered.

Can I do this in house?

The technical fix, often yes, with the free checklist and a developer. The ongoing content and outreach is where in-house tends to fail, not through lack of skill but because it is the first thing dropped when a busy week arrives.

Why does competitiveness change the price so much?

Because the work required is defined by what the people already ranking have done, not by your site. In a quiet market a well-structured site with good content is enough. In a contested one it is table stakes, and the cost is everything that comes after it.
