WordPress Maintenance Checklist.
This free WordPress website maintenance checklist splits the routine work into weekly, monthly and quarterly jobs, in the order that avoids breaking a live site. Tick jobs off, assign an owner to each, export the record or hand the link to whoever picks up the site next. It runs in your browser with no signup.
WordPress maintenance checklist
0 of 20 done
Weekly
0/6Fifteen minutes. Do it in this order.
Monthly
0/7An hour. This is where most sites quietly rot.
Quarterly
0/7Half a day. The work that prevents emergencies.
Your ticks are saved in this browser and in the page address, so a copied link brings the same state back on another device. Nothing about your site is sent to us or to anyone else.

Want someone to fix what this found?
Finding a problem and fixing it are different jobs, and the second one is ours. Send the result over and you get back what it would take to put right — scoped and priced, from the person who would do the work, within one business day.
What this tool measures
The routine WordPress work, split by cadence, in an order that avoids breaking a live site. Weekly is fifteen minutes, monthly is about an hour, quarterly is half a day. Skipping the quarterly work is what turns a normal Tuesday into an incident.
This is the list we run on sites we maintain. It assumes you have staging. If you do not, the first item on your list is getting staging, because updating plugins directly on production is a coin flip you will eventually lose.
Why the order matters
Backups come before updates, always. Not because updates usually break things, but because when one does, the gap between having a backup from an hour ago and one from last week is the difference between a ten minute rollback and a bad day.
Testing your own contact form is on the weekly list for a reason. A form that has silently stopped delivering email is the most common failure on a WordPress site, and it is invisible until someone asks why nobody replied to them.
The monthly restore test
An untested backup is a hope. Restoring one somewhere, opening it and clicking three pages turns it into a fact, and it takes twenty minutes. Almost nobody does this, and almost everybody who has been through a failed restore does it forever afterwards.
While you are there, remove plugins you no longer use. Deactivated is not removed: the code is still on your server and still a target.
What to do next
Put the weekly block in a calendar with a named owner. Maintenance that belongs to everyone belongs to nobody, and that is how sites end up three major versions behind.
Print the list, or hand it over when someone else picks up the site. The quarterly access review in particular is worth doing on a handover day, because that is exactly when a departing agency's credentials are still live.
Questions people ask
Can I just turn on automatic updates?
For core minor releases, yes, and you should. For plugins on a site that takes payments or bookings, automatic updates trade a small ongoing effort for an occasional large outage. Staging plus a weekly slot is the safer trade.
How often should backups run?
Daily for most sites, more often for stores. The number that matters is how much work you are willing to lose, and backup frequency should be set from that answer rather than from the plugin's default.
Is this list enough for an ecommerce site?
It is the base. A store adds payment gateway testing, order flow checks after every plugin update, and a rollback plan that someone has actually rehearsed.
