What social media management actually costs
Almost every social media quote is priced per post, which is the one unit that has no relationship to the work or the result. Here is what actually drives the number.

The short version
- Social media appears in 2,221 of 27,169 briefs, ahead of email, ads and content writing combined.
- Post count is the standard unit and the least meaningful one. Original assets, platforms and response obligations drive the cost.
- Every additional platform is not an additional slice of work — it is a separate format, cadence and audience.
- Community management is the line most often omitted from the quote and most often assumed by the client.
Social media management appears in 2,221 of the 27,169 project briefs we hold — more than email marketing, paid ads and content writing combined. It is also the service where the pricing unit everyone uses bears the least relationship to the work being done.
That unit is the post. Twelve posts a month, twenty posts a month, thirty. It is easy to quote, easy to compare, and almost meaningless, because a post can be a stock photo with a caption written in ninety seconds or a shoot, an edit and three rounds of approval.
What actually drives the cost
| Driver | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Original assets vs supplied or stock | The single biggest multiplier. Shooting and editing is the work; captioning is not |
| Number of platforms | Each one is a different format, cadence and audience, not a copy-paste |
| Video share | Video is several times the effort of a still, per item, at every stage |
| Response obligation | Replying to comments and messages is open-ended time, not a deliverable |
| Approval rounds | Two named approvers is a workflow; five stakeholders is a committee |
The first row dominates everything else. An engagement where the client supplies photography and the agency writes captions and schedules is a fundamentally different service from one where the agency produces the imagery, and they routinely get quoted within sight of each other because both are described as twelve posts a month.
Why platforms do not scale down
The instinctive assumption is that adding a second platform costs a fraction of the first, because the content already exists. That holds only if you are prepared to post identical content everywhere, which is exactly the approach that performs worst on every platform simultaneously.
Each platform has its own native format, its own posting cadence, its own tolerance for promotion and its own audience who may overlap very little with the others. Adapting properly is real work. Adapting improperly is visible, and the audience reads it as a company that is not really present anywhere — which is a worse position than being present on one platform well.

The line nobody quotes
Community management — replying to comments, answering direct messages, handling the occasional complaint in public — is absent from most quotes and assumed by most clients. Both positions are reasonable in isolation and together they produce a predictable argument in month two.
It is left out because it cannot be quantified in advance. A quiet account needs ten minutes a day; the same account after one post performs unusually well needs several hours. Nobody wants to price an open-ended obligation, so it silently falls off the deliverables list while remaining firmly on the client's mental one.
The workable resolution is to name it explicitly: either a defined window — replies within one business day, during working hours — or a stated exclusion with the client handling messages themselves. What does not work is leaving it unsaid, because the first unanswered customer question is when it surfaces.
What to expect for the money
Social media is a slow compounding channel and it is worth being honest about the shape of the return. The first three months of a well-run account mostly look like nothing happening, because you are establishing consistency and learning what the audience responds to. Anyone promising a transformation in six weeks is describing paid advertising, which is a different service with a different cost structure.
The measure that actually matters is whether the account produces conversations that turn into enquiries. Follower count is the easiest number to report and the least connected to revenue, which is precisely why it appears at the top of so many monthly reports.
Questions people ask
How much should social media management cost per month?
It depends far more on whether original assets are being produced than on how many posts are published. An engagement where the client supplies photography and the agency writes and schedules is a fundamentally different service from one that includes shooting and editing, yet both get described as twelve posts a month and quoted within sight of each other.
Why is pricing per post misleading?
Because a post can be a stock image with a ninety-second caption or a shoot, an edit and three approval rounds. The unit is easy to quote and easy to compare, which is why it persists, but it carries no information about the effort or the result.
Should I be on every social platform?
Usually not. Each platform has its own format, cadence and audience, so doing several properly is genuinely several jobs — and doing them improperly by posting identical content everywhere performs worst on all of them at once. One platform where your customers actually are, posted consistently with real replies, beats three at a third of the attention.
Is replying to comments included in social media management?
Usually it is not in the quote and usually the client assumes it is. Neither position is unreasonable, which is why it needs to be stated: either a defined window such as replies within one business day during working hours, or an explicit exclusion. Leaving it unsaid guarantees the argument happens at the first unanswered customer question.
How long before social media produces results?
The first three months of a well-run account mostly look like nothing is happening, because that period establishes consistency and learns what the audience responds to. Anyone promising transformation in six weeks is describing paid advertising, which is a different service with a different cost structure and a different risk profile.
